The weight of the world-Chlark f
Disclaimer: I do not own the characters as depicted in the TV-show Smallville, nor am I affiliated with blah-blahÂ…
Note: This story does not follow a specific timeline in the series. It was actually an idea that came to me out of the blue last night as I was listening to 3 Doors Down and their song “Changes”. The phrase “The weight of the world” just stuck in my head, hence the story. Anyways, it is a Chlark story…

The Weight of the World
She was unconscious. She looked so small and frail in his arms.
Like a little twig that could easily break. He touched her skin bringing his hand over her face, finally settling on her forehead. She felt hot under his palm. He checked for her pulse. He let out a sigh of relief as he realized it was slowly returning to normal. Her hair was in the way so he brushed it away from her cheeks.
Her eyelids though closed they were restless as if she were in a private world of dreams only for her. He wondered for a while if she was having a nightmare and hugged her closer to him so that their hearts now beat as one. It was silly how comforting the warmth and the weight of her body felt on his. He was supposed to be the one doing the saving, instead he felt safer just to be with her.
ItÂ’s been a while since I last felt this way
Perhaps IÂ’m late but have faith in me today
Thousands of stars have shed their light upon your face
I know IÂ’ve asked for much but tonight IÂ’d go for just a trace
It seems like we were buried under the weight of the world
But now you are here, beside me to save me from the cold
As he waited for her to come to, he looked at her face. The white skin, he thin lips, the smart, inquisitive eyes and wished he had seen. How could he have missed it? Though partly hidden, the pain was there underneath the happy “masque” of hers. It was there for someone to notice, someone to care. And he had missed it. And he didn’t know if he would ever forgive himself for that. She was after all supposed to his best friend.
His favorite journalist. He bitterly admitted he had allowed them to somehow drift apart. His trouble with Lana had absorbed most of his time not leaving enough for other things that mattered.
But he did care. He hadn’t realized just how much and in what way until he saw her earlier this evening. She was there as he entered the “Talon”. “Hey Clark” she had greeted him the minute he walked in. “Where were you? We were supposed to meet here an hour ago!” He had flinched. He felt so guilty. It had slipped his mind as he was looking after Lana. He just stood there motionless. He had watched her leave. Then he looked at Lana, then at the door and he made his choice.
I will never forget the apologetic look on your face Clark, nor the way you looked at Lana when she first approached you. But now nothing matters. We are not as we used to be. We have changed. IÂ’ve changed Clark. I am not the same person anymore!
Words resounding in his ears. Words she could have said. Words that would express what she felt. What she kept inside.
IÂ’d hold your hand forever until you asked me to stop
And no matter our problems I know we would cope
It seems like we were buried under the weight of the world
It seems we had been buried under tons of words untold
He closed his eyes. That is what it was like. And he hadnÂ’t seen this fire in her eyes before. Nor had he noticed how red her cheeks turned once she was upset and hurt.
Before all he could see was dark hair, shiny smile and an idol long fallen. A case lost, something that would never work out.
And suddenly his feelings were not obscure, they were brought to light. Enlightened, enlarged, enhanced under the prism of truth. He had excused himself from Lana and run after her. The only person he could really trust. The person who could understand and appreciate him for what he really was, for what he could give.
And he saw her. In her dark attire, her hands on the balustrade around the balcony, looking over the town. Standing out in the darkness, the brightest of stars.
He thought she was waiting for him. For a brief moment he thought he saw a smile on her face. But then his hearing overpowered his other senses. He could hear her sob, breathing hastily, her tears running down on her face as if she had suddenly received the weight of the world upon her narrow shoulders and it was too unbearable.
IÂ’d die for you and you know that itÂ’s true
And everything IÂ’ve done has always been for you
But I hadnÂ’t realized just how special you have been
And I had hurt and drive you away with words I didnÂ’t mean
It seems like we were buried under hundreds of mistakes
But have faith in me tonight ‘cause this is what it takes
At first he couldnÂ’t tell why she was profoundly sorrowful., he watched her and he wanted to do nothing other than to climb up there and put his arms around her, let he know he was there and that she was the most precious person in her life. In his world. She was his whole world. He couldnÂ’t believe she would do a thing like that but then he saw her climb up the balustrade and jump, just throw herself down, let herself wallow.
Every bit of every second felt like eons of torture in his heart. Her pain was oozing from within and could engulf him, but what he did was rush n the way of her fall, catch her body and engulf her with his love. She opened her eyes only for a second before fainting, but in this brief time he could swear he saw a smile forming on her lips and for that he was grateful. Grateful to have the chance to be there. To be there for her and hold her in his arms. Wipe her tears or let them meet his as they were trickling down his face.
IÂ’d keep you in my arms tightly until you said it was okay
That your heart had settled close to mine, finally found its way
It seems we had been buried under the weight of the world
It seems we had been buried under tons of world untold
Because tonight it seemed his world was her and her world was him. And it seemed they were both buried under the weight of the world.
“Forgive me , I love you!” he whispered hiding his face in hers.
One person, one life united facing the weight of the world.
IÂ’d keep you in my arms tightly until you said it was okay
That your heart had settled close to mine, finally found its way
It seems we had been buried under the weight of the world
It seems we had been buried under tons of world untold
I love you
THE END Thanks for reading
