Lana Lang
Back

This is a page just to keep some of the arguments i have made in some Lana threads saved. You know not to lose them or anything.
I think we are just looking it from different perspective!
I never meant to undermine or underestimate the importance of Nell in Lana's life! she is her mother in almost any way except the biological one! This is priceless i couldn't agree more with you!
But feeling depressed has nothing to do with being ungrateful for your adoptive mother or father!
I know that because one of my best friends is adopted! She is very grateful for her parents and there is almost nothing she wouldn't do for them, but feeling depressed is about feeling different than others who have their biological parents! It is not a matter of ingratitude! My friend loves them so much it makes her wanna cry but still she is pretty sad sometimes!
Iagree that Lana is well off! she has had a life better than the one led by other persons who had their real parents!
But she doesn't know everything about them!
I mean Nell knew Lana's mother as a sister so she can tell stories and Lana can understand what her mother was like! But try to remember that each person is different with different persons! I mean i know my mother as a mother! I don't know hr as a sister, nor will i ever know what it would feel like to be her sister! I only know what it feels like to be her daughter!
Lana only knows what her mother was like as a sister or a little bit as a mother, but she can't remember what it felt like to be her daughter!
Can anyone understand the subtle difference here?
I mean you all know your brother as a brother you will never know them as sons or husbands! In the same way Lana only knows what Nell told her which was explaining what her mother was like as a person in the Smallville community,as a asiter or a daughter or as a student!
see? so it is not about being ingrateful about her adoptive parents! It is another point!
(Again, sorry! Maybe i am overanalyzing it! I end to do that sometimes! It is a psychology minor residual) LOL
As for the pity thing, i never pitied Lana cos she was strong! I mean she was a cheerleader and a good student she accepted responsibilities and had friends and a sociallife with her b/f so i nver felt like she was someone i should feel sorry for! At least not the way you mean! lol
I mean, i nver felt sorry for my friend, even though she is adopted! She is strong! so very strong! Stronger than i am and very nice! She has done so many thingsin her life!
Lana has done thins too!
Plus she is only 17 or 18 and my friend and i we are in our twenties!
Okies! LetÂ’s consider the following:
Trying to make us pity her!
I don’t think so. Mentioning or sometimes saying things like that are not like being engulfed in discussions of “pity me!”. This is an exaggeration. In the same way, Chloe’s continuous sad looks at Clark, because she is in love with him while he isn’t, are reasons to pity her too. Especially when she assumes the look of “No one appreciates me!” and “ No matter what I do, Clark never sees me as a potential girlfriend, even more so when Lana is near!”. It can be said – if we are really bad- that this can be considered as calling for pity too, focused as she is in journaling. This is not healthy either, but people tend to unfairly overlook that! I am not saying that I favor this view or the previous, but I mentioned it to show the two lines of thinking one can follow and of course there are pros and cons on each side! Actually, I really felt for Chloe in Fever and now I am more of Chlark than I am Clana! The whole incident has turned me into a Chlark fan and a Lexana fan.
More examples:
What about Clark? ArenÂ’t we inclined to feel sorry ofr him for his situation? In reality, he seems to be the one deserving the most sympathy as he has no one like him close to him to show him how to control his abilities and everything!
However, consider this whole: “I love Lana but she is with Whitney”, “I love Lana but I can’t have her so I spy on her with my telescope”, “ I love Lana but Whitney asked me to look after her!”, “I love Lana but can’t tell her about mje!”, “ I love Lana but I keep pushing her away!” routine! See a pattern here? Lol
I mean this is getting a bit repetitive and it is really sad that he canÂ’t work it through!
Next: Lex!
Issues with his father, issues with his mother, issues with his nanny, issues with his brothers,, the whole town of Smallville, people who want his money (ie Helen and some crooks in s2 I think) etc.
And the whole “ The other kids at school mocked me for having no hair!”
(aaaaaaaah! I canÂ’t belibe I just typed that! Lex is my favorite! My fingers are burning! Aaaaahhhh! Lol)
So, I am not saying that I support any of these views nor are they meant to underestimate any character, it is meant to show that if we want to show that every character has annoying parts and can be calling for pity, we canÂ… with ease! Even for our favorite one! Snif! Lol
Next, there is the point of multitasking! I really don’t understand this point! I mean, when I was in highschool I had classes, homework, English lessons, Italian lessons and of course homework for those two, choir rehearsals, rehearsals with the band I was in, computer courses and of course tae kwo do classes! And I did it! (how good is another issue! Lol) Because I really like it! Thousands of teenagers around the world do it! Many of my friends too and I am sure you know people who do it too! I don’t consider it so special! I only mentioned that because I wanted to show that Lana’s life is “neat”, not swallowed in self-pity! The thought of some people considering it as script trick to attract admiration didn’t occur to me because I see it all around me so I don’t consider it so special!
Plus, if you think that is too much what about Lex?
Dspite difficulties he graduated with honors he had I donÂ’t know how many majors in college and again graduated with honor and he has run two businees, made deals with other businessmen and has found solutions to problems that would a whole board of Economics a hard time!! And all at the age of 20-21-22-23..
And Chloe? What about her? She goes to her classes, does her homework, investigates for her articles or takes interviews, types her articles, assigns the articles to her journalists (I have seen only one or two btw! And Adam Brody who drew), reads and corrects their articles, makes he layout for the Torch and oversees the whole procedure and of courseÂ…She is home for dinner! Lol
So, the characters of Smallville all seem to be of high intelligence and masters of multitasking! If you accept it for Lex and Chloe it seems a bit biased not to accept it for Lana too!
(Personally, I accept it for everyone of them, I take it as given to save myself the headache! Lol)
Next, interests and cheerleading! Cheerleading and horseback riding are counted as interests and hobbies in my list! When was the last time we saw Clark or Chloe having a hobby? The script leaves a lot for us to guess! And donÂ’t tell me ChloeÂ’s hobby is to investigate cos this is directly linked to her identity and work as a journalist! And in the same way baking in the back and keeping TalonÂ’s books might be considered LanaÂ’s hobbies, since she could have gotten some help if she wanted to!! (lame if that were true! Lol)
As for the argument of Lana being pretty! I think it is my bad and I apologize for not having explained it more clearly! What I was referring to was not being pretty per se but in relation with other people! People tend to pay attention to oneÂ’s appearance when they first meet each other and decide whether they want to hang out with each other or not! So LanaÂ’s appearance gives her an advantage. I would feel sorry for her if she were ugly and no one wanted to be with her or be her friend! The only person who is at a disadvantage is Lex, who had no hair since he was a boy! (Again, this is when thinking about it objectively, because subjectively I think he is gorgeous!!! But I have friends who donÂ’t find him attractive at all because of his baldness!)
Then about having a b/f: Yes, I meant s1 when she had Whitney and we were just beginning to know the characters. Actually, I liked Whitney and Lana was nice to him. As for the kissing, well, we havenÂ’t seen the girls kiss a lot! We have seen Chloe kiss two guys: Clark and Adam Brody and Lana has kissed Whitney some times and Clark 5 to 6 times (up to s2 that I have seen- including the kisses of Nicodemus and Red eppies where both Lana and Clark were under the influence of substances/viruses etc. So not seeing Lana kiss with Whitney so much was hardly an issue for me! I mean when Lana and Clark got together I was expecting lots of passion and stuff but that wasnÂ’t the case! It was a bit disappointing for me! Of course Clark had some additional kissing with Kyla, Sara Downing the runaway girl and Krista Allen.
As for the moony looks, Lana was not giving Clark any moony looks when she was with Whitney! She only started to when things between Whitney and her became kinda unfavorable and less fulfilling (cos Whitney may have been a great guy but they had no sparkle, no fire imo).
Even under the influence of the Nicodemus flower, which brought her wild side and instincts to the surface, the person she first went to was Whitney. Furthermore, when she wanted to break up with Whitney and his father died she didnÂ’t, thinking (I assume) that he was going to get hurt and that didnÂ’t need her as a friend back then but as a girlfriend, because Lana was the only person Whitney opened up to and not to one of his friends, suggesting perhaps that the kind of support he needed was the one he could get from his girlfriend and not one of his friends. One could raise the issue of honesty here, but actually, there is nothing to suggest that LanaÂ’s support per se was dishonest or half-hearted! She still loved him but she was not in love with him.
When she and Whitney separated though, giving moony looks to Clark was just as acceptable as Chloe giving him those looks! The only thing is that Chloe had been giving them those looks for much longer to no real avail!
And you know what? This is a thing that bugs me in the Smallville plot. Both Lana and Chloeapart maybe form Pete who strikes me as a more independent guy, seem to be blinded to other guys, I mean other than Clark. I mean their school is full of boys! Why do they stand for ClarkÂ’s indecision and attitude? They are both intelligent and gorgeous!!!!
Then on to the most valid point of Anti-Lana arguments, imo!
Indeed, it can seem pretty strange how Lana can manage everything in her life including the Talon. I have some points to make about it that can provide some support that it is not strange! Or that strange, but before I do that, I would like once more to mention that all characters have the unique ability to multitask. Lex is a multinational businessman since he was 20 or something, Chloe seems to be the worldÂ’s most perfect journalist and still has a lot of time on her handsÂ….
Now, letÂ’s consider running the Talon, which indeed must be a lot more complicated than they make it look! But they make other things look very easy too, things that Lex and Chloe do! I think it is should be considered in the general framework of just getting the plot going!
Ok, now the Talon: First of all it is a small company! It is a small coffee shop and Lex did help her in the beginning to get it running, so she learned form the best in a way, the Master!
Moreover, she did have some help in some eppies! There were two waitresses at the Talon in an eppie with Ryan, who predicted that one of them was stealing money form Lana and there was a guy who helped with the decoration and I am not sure but we have seen Clark and others help her a little bit though I am not positive about that! Plus, we know (and I hear that this is the case is s3 too) that Lex helped her with book keeping and stuff in the beginning!
So, this may be a bit stretched (ok, maybe even a lot) but I think it should be seen in the general context of the “easy plot”! Isn’t it biased to see the easiness of plots only in the case of Lana?
Furthermore, waitering (sp?) has nothing to do with running a business, plus the fact that I recall (I may be wrong about that) that Lana said it was her first week at that place or something! Someone I know was lousy in the beginning but now wins “Employee of the week” for months!
I would also like to add another point I thought of! I am an economics major so we learn macroeconomics (economics at the level of a nation or the industry) and microeconomics (economics at the level of the individual firm). So maybe someone is good at picturing the whole economy, market while others are better at focusing on the micro level. Maybe Lana is one of the former, who are more at ease with supervising and making sure that an institution is functioning properly. Maybe she is better at running a small business that she is at dealing with every single detail or individual clients! (though she seemed to be gradually getting better by the end of s2).
So, concluding with this point, I agree that it is far-fetched (ww?) but whining about it brings about the issue of doubting the whole context of Smallville that presents most characters uniquely gifted.
In addition to that, Sharkie said that sheÂ’d prefer to think that Lana found the solution through plot contrivance rather than determination, will or intelligence. That is acceptable. It is her opinion and I respect it. But in the same line of thinking, LexÂ’s unique intelligence and wit (as he finds solutions to problems that would puzzle a board of economics as I said before) and ChloeÂ’s unique journalistic gut instinct and competence could be thought of as plot contrivance too (especially as Clark seems to be using Chloe as his personal search engine, which I personally resent, as it undermines her abilities and ruins the prospects of having incredibly interesting storylines based on her, which is a shame!)
Again for the pity argument, let me once more say that the above-mentioned points do not seem to provide support for feeling pity.
I mean Lana has Nell, Clark loves her, she runs Talon- she isnÂ’t calling for pity! As for her occasional depression, I think it is understandable! You can read one of my previous posts in this page or the previous one.
And worshipping Lana? Who said anything about worshipping her?
I may like her but I worship Lex!!!!! I think he is an excellent character, not without flaws but overall more interesting than Lana imo!!
I think he is great? Could you tell by my post? Lol
I mean it was just as easy for me to find things to criticize him for. All it takes is to keep oneÂ’s eyes, ears and mind open!
If you want to find faults in a character you can do it easily! At least for most of them! What is important is to try and see each and every one of them in equal terms or at least with the same sympathy and respect!
I agree that Chloe, Lana, Clark and Lex lovers as well as Chloe, Lana, Clark and Lex non-lovers have some valid points so the truth must be somewhere in the middle!
